Work begins on major water storage reservoir at Waimate North

A Manawhenua blessing by Kaumatua (Te Rau Allen) was held at the site adjacent to Te Ahuahu Road on the 18th of October, allowing the construction of the 3rd major water storage reservoir by Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust to begin.

The Otawere Water Storage Reservoir is expected to hold 4,000,000m3 of water and be completed over 2 construction seasons.

Site establishment and enabling works are now commencing on site with work expected to start on the main 17m high dam embankment early in the new year. Trustees Deputy chair Dover Samuels and Kathryn de Bruin said the construction of this water storage reservoir will be a great asset to enable land use change to higher value, and more sustainable horticulture use in the wider Waimate North and Oheawhai Communities.

Next year an information memorandum will be made available for those wishing to subscribe to shares in the reservoir and associated distribution infrastructure. Anyone with questions associated with the project, or wishing to express interest in water shares, should contact the Tai Tokerau Water Trust via email at info@taitokerauwater.com.
